Healthy but weird food combinations

13/02/2023

To add some pizzazz to your diet, The Veg Box Company has got some healthy but weird food combinations for you to try out. Though unconventional, these strange food combinations go better together than you’d expect (we promise!).

Weird food combos

For some suggestions on what oddly delicious combinations you can try out, we recommend:

  • Banana with honey and peanut butter
  • Green apple and salsa
  • Cheddar cheese and apple pie
  • Miso and butternut squash
  • Watermelon and feta
  • Cottage cheese and pineapple
  • Mango with lime and chilli

Banana with honey and peanut butter

Looking for something new and exciting to eat to begin the day? Bundling up protein, fibre and energy all in one, this weird food combo is a great choice for an unusual breakfast. Try it on some wholemeal bread to get some extra fibre in, or on a slice of toast for some extra crunch.

Green apple and salsa

Combining tanginess with sweetness, green apple and salsa isn’t likely to be a pairing your taste buds are accustomed to but these two work together surprisingly well. The apple’s sharpness counteracts the heat of the salsa. For another switch-up, you can also swap the apples out for mangoes or pineapples.

Cheddar cheese and apple pie

Next time you’re baking at home, why not try this weird food combination? Cheddar cheese’s tanginess works great when baked into a sweet apple pie, giving the best of sweet and savoury.

To cut down on your calorie and fat intake, you can use reduced fat cheddar in place of the full fat stuff.

Miso and butternut squash

This weird food combination combines miso’s umaminess with the sweetness of butternut squash. Weird but wonderful!

These two foods are great for essential vitamins and nutrients. Miso contains vitamin K and manganese while butternut squash contains calcium and iron. Try adding your miso to a butternut squash soup or roasting your squash and adding some miso.

Watermelon and feta

Great in a Greek salad or even by itself, feta is brilliantly moreish. But did you know, you can combine feta with watermelon for a tasty and weird food combination?

To complement the lightness of watermelon, you can pair it with the density of the feta in a watermelon salad to contrast the two textures. For some added aroma, try complementing the salad with some mint.

Cottage cheese and pineapple

For something weird and wonderful, you can combine pineapple and cottage cheese. Pineapple’s sharp and sweet flavour in combination with the tang of the cottage cheese make for a weird flavour combo that you may never have thought to try, but we wholeheartedly recommend!

Mango with chilli and lime

You may have encountered this weird food combination before, though it isn’t very common in the British Isles. Popular in Mexico as a street food, the blend of mango with lime and chilli is powerful but irresistible.

The sweetness of the mango merged with the sharp and acidic kick of the chilli and lime makes for a great pairing. Try it with a little salt to make this strange food combination even more delectable.
