Best oranges for juicing
Before considering the best oranges for juicing, you have to think about what you want from your orange. Different types of oranges actually provide different tastes, from tangy and sour to much sweeter. So, what are the best oranges for juicing?
- Blood oranges
- Valencia oranges
- Navel oranges
Blood oranges
If you want a strong, powerful orange taste in your juice, then blood oranges are the way to go. Blood oranges look exactly as you’d expect them to on the outside, but they have a passionate, deep red colour inside. This adds incredible colour and flavour to your glass once juiced, but they also have higher antioxidant content than traditional oranges.
Valencia oranges
Valencia oranges are a combination of sweet and tarty and are among the best oranges for juicing. They have a short growing season (March to September), so be quick if you plan on having them at home!
Navel oranges
Navel oranges are very sweet and juicy, so are great for juicing. They can be found all year-round, so are perfect for avid juicers, especially if you prefer your oranges a tad sweeter. If you’d like to try your hand at juicing, check out our 5kg juicing oranges.
Do you peel oranges before juicing?
If you’re new to the world of juicing, then you may not know whether or not to peel your oranges before juicing. You also may not know that there’s so much nutrition within the peel that many people miss.
A lot of people who squeeze their oranges to taste the delicious juice inside peel first but actually lose minerals like potassium and magnesium and vitamins B6, B2 and C.
If you want to get the maximum benefit from your orange while juicing, you should leave the peel on. For juice for the whole family (for quite a while), pick up 15kg juicing oranges from The Veg Box Company.
How to make your own orange juice
There are three ways to make your very own orange juice. It’s easier than you may think as well! Here are the different ways of how to make your own orange juice:
- Electric juicer
- Blender
- Handheld juicer
Electric juicer
Take into account what we’ve just said about your peels and keep them on if you want to experience all the goodness that’s possible from an orange. The first step is to slice your orange into segments so that it fits into your juicer, and remove any seeds.
Segment by segment, place the slices into the juicer. Once you’ve fed them all through the juicer you should be able to enjoy your delicious orange juice!
Blender
Cut your oranges up, remove the seeds and place them inside the blender. Occasionally, around 60ml of water can help with the blend without watering the flavour down.
Blend the orange juice in a pulp-like consistency then pour it through a sieve. However, if you like the added pulpy bits of the juice, they can actually carry more nutrients.
Handheld juicer
This is a very simple procedure. If you have a handheld juicer at home, simply cut your oranges in half and remove the seeds. Place the inside of the orange down over the juicer, press down and squeeze while rotating back and forth. This is the best way to draw as much juice out of the orange as possible.
